New job, no money, MAY be dream job or old job good money, hate the work? | |
I have a good job now that pays well and the people are great but i hate it... 9-5 at a computer. but i was offered a position that will either be my dream job working with horses or really tough muck work but it pays half as much with twice as many hours and is hard physical work. and my boss now is really sick with chemo so theres also the ethical problem with leaving. but I'm mid 20's and this job may be my chance. its something i always wanted to do but was never given the opportunity. I would also have to move 40 minutes away from my serious b/f. i just don't know- take a risk with something i don't know for no money or stay put grin and bear it? my bf wants me to do whatever will make me happiest but i don't know what that is. if i stay where i'm at now i get the money and face time with my bf but if i go theres a chance i may love it. i really like working hard with my hands. any advice? safe secure job with money or risk going after a dream job?

1First of all, successful people don't sit around waiting to be "given" an opportunity (unless they're in a position to live off family money or connections). Many of the most successful people have taken great risks in their careers. But they don't do it blindly. They make decisions only after calculating the pros and cons and creating backup plans in case they fail.
There are plenty of people who took risks by making great life changes and are happier for it. But there are just as many people who took great leaps and fell off the horse. If you're prepared to get back on the horse again after failure, you'll probably be fine either way.
Even without taking great risks, having a sucessful career means working hard. You can't expect to like every second of your job. That's not how it works. This sometimes means sucking it up and hanging on to a desk job that may not be your dream job but pays the bills and creates opportunities for advancement. Or it could mean forfeiting the money and opting for a job that allows you to get experience in your field of interest. Ultimately, only you can make the decision for yourself. For now, it may seem that your decision will depend on whether your definition of success is being rich or being happy.
Be creative. Try to come up with other alternatives. But if you do end up faced with a single decision - should I take X job or Y - here's some good advice: have an end goal in mind; when you come to a fork in the road, take the path that will bring you closer to your goal and you will eventually reach it.....just remember there are many ways to reach a goal, and sometimes the shortest route is not the most practical given everything else that may be going on in your life right now.
Weigh the pros and cons. What is your future in your current job? Is there a chance for advancement? Is the career path consistent with your desired lifestyle? Do you have enough experience to enter this new field? Are you the kind of person that needs a lot of money to be happy? Will staying with your current job create more time in your life to enjoy other hobbies? Is it possible to work with horses and still keep your current job? Will working with horses really open the door for a new career? Are you financially, emotionally, physically prepared to make the change? What about staying in your current job might help make you better prepared to enter the career you desire in the future? If you go for the new job but decide you want to get back into your current career, will that be possible? Are there other alternatives? Be honest with yourself. If your reasons for staying with your current job aren't compelling enough, you have your answer.
Also, talking to the people who know you best is a great way to help decide what is best for you. But I would advise you to make the decision yourself. You'll be much happier in the long run.
